Custom Wavefront Treatment

Custom LASIK with Intralase Myopic Astigmatism at 1 year postop / Custom PRK Myopic Astigmatism at 1 year postop

Custom Treatment

Custom treatments use wavefront technology to measure both lower- and higher-order aberrations that are unique to each eye, information that guides the laser in tailoring the treatment to the eye’s particular visual irregularities. This customized approach improves both visual acuity, which is measured by standard numerical outcomes such as 20/20, and the overall quality of vision such as visual crispness and clarity.

How Wavefront Technology Works

Wavefront acquisition

After a light is reflected off the retina, the wavefront analyzer captures the light exiting the eye, recording it in detail
The wavefront device transmits a ray of light into the patient’s eye. The light is reflected off the retina and is captured by the wavefront analyzer as it exits the eye. Each eye’s visual irregularities are recorded and displayed as a three-dimensional, wavefront map. The detailed wavefront information is electrically transferred to the excimer laser, enabling the surgeon to perform a custom procedure that addresses each eye’s unique set of lower- and higher-order aberrations.

The emmetropic (“normal”) eye

Light exits the eye in parallel rays, represented by a flat wavefront

Perfect Eye Chart
Eye chart as seen by an emmetropic eye

The myopic (“nearsighted”) eye

Light exits the eye in converging rays, represented by a dome-shaped wavefront

Defocus Chart
Eye chart as seen by a myopic eye

The astigmatic (“football-shaped”) eye

Light exits the eye in rays represented by a saddle shaped wavefront

Astigmatism Chart
Eye chart as seen by an astigmatic eye; distortion is in the direction of the astigmatism

An eye with high coma (i.e., keratoconus)

Wavefront of an eye with coma; abnormal corneal shape such as seen in keratoconus

Coma Chart
Eye chart as seen by an eye with high coma; note comet shaped tail-like distortion

An eye with spherical aberration
Wavefront of an eye with spherical aberration; previous refractive surgery and/or very large pupils

Spherical Aberration Chart
Eye chart as seen by an eye with spherical aberration; note halo distortion, often seen around lights at night

Customized Procedure
Detailed wavefront information is transferred to laser to perform a custom procedure, unique to each individual eye
