The IntraLase® Method
For an All Laser Blade-Free LASIK Eye Surgery Experience

We realize that the decision to have LASIK surgery is significant, so our doctors and staff at the UCLA Laser Refractive Center take great care to determine what’s best for you as our patient. That’s why we offer The IntraLase® Method, a blade-free LASIK procedure with refined safety features.

The patients of UCLA Laser Refractive Center can now elect vision correction surgery with more confidence than ever before. Blade-free LASIK using the IntraLase Method offers incomparable safety and the highest level of precision flap creation available. If you are seeking LASIK in Los Angeles, now is a great time to call us for an explanation of the technology.

How is blade-free LASIK different?

Traditional LASIK involves the use of a hand-held oscillating blade used to create the corneal flap manually. The flap is then gently folded back to allow the laser reshaping of the cornea: the second step in the LASIK procedure. With the IntraLase method, pulses of laser light create your corneal flap. This bladeless, computer technology allows the surgeon to create predictable flaps with the highest level of precision available.

IntraLase Assurance and Comfort

The IntraLase method has been used successfully on hundreds of thousands of eyes and we trust this advanced technology to deliver exceptional results. Our commitment is to provide you with the ultimate in safety, comfort and outstanding vision. LASIK with IntraLase can help you achieve all of this—while it delivers the added assurance of being treated with the most advanced technology available.

LASIK performed with IntraLase is preferred by patients.

In a survey of clinical practices, the vision in the IntraLase-treated eye was preferred to 3 to 1 by patients over the vision in the mechanical blade–treated eye (among those who stated a preference).

LASIK performed with IntraLase delivers superior visual results.

In a clinical study comparing the IntraLase laser to the leading microkeratome, more patients achieved 20/20 vision or better in standard and custom LASIK surgery when the IntraLase method was used to create the corneal flap.  Here at the UCLA Laser Refractive Center, our percentage of patients achieving 20/20 or better uncorrected visual acuity following Custom LASIK improved from 80% when using the mechanical microkeratome to 90% when using the IntraLase system.

How the IntraLase Method Works

Unlike mechanical instruments, IntraLase technology allows the surgeon to custom program the dimensions of your corneal flap based on the unique measurements of your eye. The IntraLase laser creates the flap from below the surface of the cornea—without ever cutting it. How?

  1. Ultra–fast pulses of laser light position microscopic bubbles at a precise depth in the corneal tissue as determined by your surgeon.
  2. The laser light passes back and forth through the tissue, creating rows of tiny bubbles in a uniform plane just beneath the corneal surface.
  3. The IntraLase laser then stacks bubbles in a circular pattern to create the edges of your flap. These bubbles are stacked at a particular angle that is determined by your doctor and is personalized to the way your eye is shaped.
  4. The entire process of making the corneal flap takes only approximately 30 seconds from start to finish— and it’s quiet and comfortable.
  5. After your surgeon gently lifts the flap and performs the reshaping with the excimer laser, the flap “locks” smoothly back into position and begins to heal immediately.

Because of the superior accuracy of the IntraLase method, certain patients who were ineligible for LASIK in the past, may now be able to have treatment. If you are seeking LASIK in Los Angeles, call us to schedule a complimentary consultation to be evaluated for Custom LASIK with IntraLase.
